Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach

What Have We Been Up To?

Our council was invited by GSUSA to participate in a special screening of Charlotte’s Web in December. We created this opportunity into a recruiting event by asking each Girl Scout to introduce Girl Scouts to a friend by inviting her to the screening.

Girls enjoyed an evening out with their special guy at the “King and I” event.

Alumnae member Melinda Elmer taught a self-defense class for our older girls during the “Take Charge” event.

We had 75 girls each day attend our 3-day Winter Camps held during the Christmas holiday break. Girls made tasty treats, winter crafts including 3-dimensional snowflakes, and just had fun making new friends, singing camp songs, and being Girl Scouts

Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout

Since 1912, millions of women have had their lives positively influenced—sometimes even transformed—by their Girl Scout experience. Research conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute and Louis Harris in 1999 shows that 66 percent of women of professional achievement were Girl Scouts at some point in their youth, compared with 41 percent of American women overall. In addition, Louis Harris research shows that 82 percent of high-achieving Girl Scout alumnae believe that Girl Scouting influenced their success.

Whether you are one of the 50 million women who were Girl Scouts, including Brownie Scouts, or you were a volunteer or staff member who worked at the national or local level to help Girl Scouts reach their full potential, you are forever connected to a rich and vibrant movement.

Girl Scouts Through the Generations

As many of you know, 2007 marks the 95th birthday of the Girl Scout movement. Our council would like to celebrate those families who have 3 or more generations of Girl Scouts in their family. (Girl, Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother) Families will be profiled in various marketing materials and celebrations. Please contact Myrna Pappas at mpappas@gscglb.org. Please stay tuned for news of upcoming 95th Birthday celebration events.

Needed: Event Venues

We’re looking for inexpensive sites to hold future Girl Scout events like sleep-overs and other larger indoor events (dances, dinners, etc). We would need an indoor location to hold about 100-200 people. Tables, chairs, kitchens and sound equipment are usually a huge plus, but not required! If you know of a place we could contact that can provide us with a hall or large room, please email Vickie.

We’re also looking for ideas for venues for next year’s Cookie Rally, which takes place in late January. This site would need to be able to accommodate anywhere from 300 – 700 people and since it’s in January, it would need to have some type of shelter. Email Vickie, if you have any ideas!

Stay Connected, Change a Girl’s Life

As Girl Scout Alumnae, you know firsthand how transforming a positive program can be in a girl’s life. Whether you are actively involved with Girl Scouts or not, you can stay connected through our council and the National Girl Scout Alumnae Program. Please visit our website www.gscglb.org or contact Myrna Pappas at mpappas@gscglb.org to find out how you can get connected. For more information about the Girl Scout Movement on a national level please visit www.gsusa.org.

Giving Back to Girl Scouts

In partnership with over 250 local councils, Girl Scouts of the USA has launched Commit To A Girl, its first-ever national online fundraising initiative to generate financial support and further strengthen Girl Scouts' position as the premier advocate for girls.

Commit To A Girl is a stand-alone Web site through which visitors can learn about what's really happening in girls' lives today and the powerful impact that Girl Scout participation has on a girl's life. The site offers visitors the opportunity to make a gift that supports a girl's experience as a Girl Scout. In short, the Commit To A Girl campaign allows caring adults to give the gift of Girl Scouting to girls who may otherwise never have the chance to experience this positive influence in their lives.

Alumnae and all of those who have been touched by Girl Scouts may donate directly to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach through the Commit to a Girl website. Donor’s also have the opportunity to create their own "Commit To A Girl" page that can be customized to honor a loved one, contact old friends, celebrate a birthday, sign up a book club, reach out to coworkers or classmates, or even host a virtual fundraising party. Visit the Commit to a Girl website to learn more or contact Myrna Pappas at mpappas@gscglb.org to Commit to a Girl today.
