Exploring Girls' Leadership
The Girl Scout Research Institute has just put out a new research document titled “Exploring Girls Leadership”. Exploring Girls’ Leadership comes at a pivotal time in Girl Scouts of the USA’s history and is a resource on youth, girls, and leadership. Importantly, the document helps establish Girl Scouts as an expert on girls in general, and on leadership development in particular. It serves as a lead up to an original study on girls and leadership that will explore girls’ and boys’ definitions of leadership, their perceptions and attitudes about leadership and leadership behaviors, and what girls need to see themselves as leaders today and in the future.
This report analyzes the literature from the youth development and youth leadership fields and contrasts continued misperceptions with youths’ realities and community approaches to leadership in the field. It also suggests areas for further study, such as the aspirational gap faced by girls who see themselves as leaders today but don’t necessarily aspire to leadership roles as adults. In addition, the review gives voice to girls by including findings from a small online survey and focus groups of girls around the country. In conjunction with its 95th anniversary in 2007, Girl Scouting has launched a historic transformation to modernize the iconic organization and focus on leadership development for girls in the 21st century. In addition to creating new leadership programming for girls, Girl Scouts of the USA is revitalizing the Girl Scout brand, creating new fundraising models, improving volunteer systems, and significantly realigning the national Girl Scout council infrastructure. The monumental changes have been designed to deliver a program that focuses on Girl Scouts’ core strength of leadership development, while also offering provable outcomes that benefit girls, families and communities. Please contact Myrna if you would like a copy of this document.
Girl Scouts Participate in the Robotics Program
Two of our Senior Girl Scouts, Jessie Klemme and Taylor Halsey, have been selected to participate in the first event SoCal Girl Scouts Robotics Team. The team is made up of 10 girls selected from all of the councils in the greater Los Angeles area. The team meets each week with engineers from Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) who are helping to guide them as they design and build their very own computerized robot. The team (one of the only all-girl teams) will be competing in the regional competition in December.
United Way Funding Change
After many years of mutually-beneficial collaboration, the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach is disappointed to no longer receive United Way funding from the United Way of Greater Los Angels, due to United Way’s new Pathways Out of Poverty funding criteria. United Way was one of the few agencies to provide general operating funds for non-profit agencies. Their change in funding strategy has created quite a financial loss for not only all of the Girl Scout councils in the greater Los Angeles area but also other local non-profit agencies. The only funds we will be receiving from United Way is through individual designated gifts. Now more than ever, Girl Scouts needs financial support from community businesses, foundations, and individuals. Participating in the United Way Annual Campaign through payroll deductions is one way you can help. Through participating in your annual employer sponsored United Way giving campaign you may designate your financial gift to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach by entering agency code #16444 on your United Way Pledge Form. All donations generated from their annual campaigns will go directly to the designated agencies (minus their 9%administration fee.) Please contact Myrna for more information
