What Have We Been Up To?
Senior Girl Scouts from Troop 330 organized a wonderful Thinking Day event on Friday, February 24th
for the LACHEN Service Unit. Troops sponsored booths from China, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia,
and Thailand, which not only shared facts about the country but also had a craft and food item.
Senior Girl Scouts taught the younger girls about the World Centers as well as the Juliette Low
World Friendship Fund (for which the girls did chores and earned over $50 in donations). Not only
did all the girls have fun learning about each country, they also helped make blankets for Su Casa, a
shelter for abused women and children.
Daisy Troop #16 planted daisies around the flag pole at Longfellow Elementary for their Make the
World a Better Place patch. The Principal and teachers all stopped by to tell the Girls what a
great job they were doing. They had great fun mixing the old dirt and the new dirt, and
then planting the flowers.
1,905 girls from our council participated in selling cookies this year, and they sold 311,789 boxes! That is up 3.3% from last year. 132 girls made the prestigious 500 Club, too, as opposed to 119 last year and only 80 in 2005. We will also be donating 3,934 boxes to the National Guard through our Operation Appreciation program, 2,554 more boxes than last year! Way to go, girls!
New Collaborative Program
Discover Girl Scouts, an exciting new twelve week pilot program for girls ages 5 – 17, will begin on April 13th for residents at Las Palmas’ Northpointe, an affordable housing property in north Long Beach. In addition to offering Girl Scouts to the local girls, the program will also train residents and community members who are interested in becoming Girl Scout adult volunteers.
This unique program is a first-time-ever collaboration of the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach (GSCGLB), the City of Long Beach’s Housing Services Bureau, and the Las Palmas Housing Company and is designed to reach girls in underserved neighborhoods.
GSCGLB created this innovative twelve week program to help girls ages 5 to 17 develop leadership skills, learn core Girl Scout values, and develop confidence in their own self-worth. Activities will be tied to specific outcomes such as safety and making good decisions, valuing cultural diversity and individual uniqueness, educating and inspiring others, and making a difference through community service and action. Girls will earn age-appropriate Girl Scout badges upon completion of the program.
Residents and community members interested in becoming Girl Scout adult volunteers will also be provided with the training necessary to secure the sustainability of the program. Adult training will include CPR/First Aid, troop financial management, public speaking, and Girl Scout traditions.
The kick-off event for this program was held on Saturday, March 24th, at Northpointe. Representatives from the offices of our local elected officials, our CEO, Shannon Johnston, and representatives from the Las Palmas Housing Foundation spoke during this exciting event. We received a terrific response from the residents of Northpointe and are looking forward to the start of this program.
Upon completion of the twelve week program, traditional troops will be formed, led by the newly trained adult volunteers to provide an on-going Girl Scout experience for the girls.
The Discover Girl Scouts program will be delivered to four additional affordable housing sites in Long Beach during the summer and fall of 2007. We are looking to extend this new program throughout the communities we serve. If you would like to know more about this program and how you can be involved, please contact Myrna at (562) 421-8456 ext 229.
