Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach

Recent Events

We have had quite a few activities and celebrations recently. Here are some of the highlights!

Adult Recognition, Mildred Walderstein

Adult Recognition

A Celebration of Adults in Girl Scouting” was held at the beautiful Petroleum Club. Many adult Girl Scouts were honored for reaching “Membership Milestones” of 20 years to 55 years of being active in the Girl Scout movement. One of our most active Girl Scouts, 90-year old Mildred Walderstein, received her 80 year membership pin! Additional awards included: “Outstanding Volunteer”, “Outstanding Leader”, “Appreciation Pin”, “Honor Pin”, and the “Community Award”.

Sunset in Naples

Sunset in Naples

Over 100 guess enjoyed a fun filled evening of great food provided by da Vinci’s restaurant, delicious wine from The Wine Country, a tour of the bay from Gondola Getaway and much more! Many thanks to the Lakewood Service Unit for providing the musical performance, Jessie Klemme and Sasha Malbrough for serving as our very own “Vanna Whites” and to the following service units for donating beautiful baskets to the Silent Auction: Bellflower/Hollymount, Lakewood, RDE, Norwalk/LaMirada, and Alamitos Marina. Proceeds from this annual fundraising event will support our programs, properties, camperships, and adult training.

Marine Landing

Summer Camp

Summer Camp started on June 18th at Marine Landing and July 5th at El Ranchito! It is such a joy to see all the girls playing and having fun while engaging in eductional and exciting activities provided by the Council and our well trained summer staff. Various camp themes include Muggle Magic (Harry Potter), It's My Party (a week full of parties every day!), Camp Beverly Hills, Grossology, Her Royal Highness, and Survivor.

Travel the World on the Ship for World Youth

Do you have girls between 18 and 30, flexible and willing to travel for two months, January 15-March 5, 2008, with 250 youths from around the world? If so, they may want to apply for the Ship for World Youth, which is organized and financed by the Government of Japan. On the Ship for World Youth, they’ll visit Japan, Singapore, Oman and India to learn about international cooperation and understanding while serving with 10 other youth ambassadors from the United States. The selection committee encourages Girl Scout members--girls and adults--to apply. To learn more about the Ship for World Youth, including its history, who can apply, and the application deadlines, click on the links in the Get Involved section of the Ships for World Youth USA website.

Did You Know?

64% of today’s women executives/leaders have taken part in Girl Scouts. 76% of successful women said Girl Scouts taught them the benefits of working with a group to accomplish a common goal.

If you ask today’s women leaders where they acquired their drive, their spirit, and their leadership skills, more than 50% will talk about the powerful and positive experience they had with Girl Scouts. That is where these successful women learned to stand strong, with courage and confidence, and character.

Attention Boeing Employees!

The Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach currently receives grant funding from the Boeing Foundation and we would like to apply for additional funding from the Employee’s Community Fund of Boeing California to help fund our Discover Girl Scouts program. One of the grant requirements is to be nominated by the employees of Boeing. The more nominations our council receives the stronger our grant proposal.
