Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach

Girl Scouts Through the Generations

As many of you know, 2007 marks the 95th birthday of the Girl Scout movement. Our council would like to celebrate those families who have 3 or more generations of Girl Scouts in their family (Girl, Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother). Families will be profiled in various marketing materials and celebrations. If this is your family or perhaps one of the girls in your troop fits this profile, please contact Myrna Pappas at mpappas@gscglb.org.

Highlights from 2006

67 couples enjoyed the Girl and Guy in your life event “The King and I”. Girls and their guys enjoyed a delicious dinner, created their very own crowns, and danced the night away!

75 girls attended our Winter Camp each day which was held during the holiday break. The girls had fun creating and eating tasty treats, lots of fun crafts, and making new friends.

On Saturday January 6th, the older girls learned how to make safe and informed decisions, dialogued about a variety of issues including violence against women, safe dating, and harassment. The day ended with a lesson on self-defense. Many thanks to Deputy Dan Castaneda from the Lakewood Sheriffs Department who assisted in facilitating the discussions, and to Melinda Elmer who led the instruction on Self-Defense.

It's Cookie Time!

Did you know? The Girl Scout Cookie Program is America’s leading business and economic literacy program for girls. Here are a few facts to spread around about Girl Scout Cookie Sales:

Approximately 200 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies are sold each year, and proceeds benefit girls in their local communities.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program has helped Girl Scouting become the best leadership development program for girls. Girls also learn important entreprenurial skills like teamwork, marketing and goal setting.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program enables girls to build business and career opportunities by expanding their network – connecting with a wide variety of people and customers in many communities and places of work.

This year all varieties of Girl Scout cookies are now zero trans fat per serving.

All Cookie Program forms are now available on our website.

Do you have grown-ups who help their daughters meet their selling goal? Be sure to download the newly created Cookie Goal Flyer to hang up at work, place of worship, etc.

Did You Know? A Proud Legacy

Girl Scout Cookie Program celebrates 90 Years this year! The Girl Scout Cookie Program launched in 1917 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where the Mistletoe Troop baked and sold cookies in its high school cafeteria as a service project. In 1922, The American Girl magazine published by Girl Scout national headquarters featured a cookie recipe together with estimated costs and suggested pricing. In 1936, Girl Scouts of the USA began licensing a commercial baker, and in 1937 more than 125 Girl Scout councils took part in the cookie program. Thin Mints – the most popular Girl Scout cookie variety – made its debut in 1951 as "Chocolate Mints."

Troop News

Troop #1 Third Grade Brownies were planning their bridging and flying up ceremony. One of our requirements was to create a poem to read at the ceremony. This acrostic was created the by the girls. We brainstormed words to go with each letter of the word BROWNIES. There were several suggestions made, the girls then voted for the one they liked best. They were very proud of the results. The girls learned how fun it is to work together and they experienced the democratic process in action. Each girl wrote their letter and drew a picture depicting their word. Their cards went into their personal scrapbooks to admire for years to come.

Looking for a Few Good Mentors

Are you one of many seasoned leaders? Our council is looking for assistance in mentoring some of our new troop leaders. Do you remember your first year as a leader? Your first meeting with twelve little girls looking up to you as if you had all of the answers and were going to lead them on this Girl Scout adventure? The time commitment is minimal for this program. You will just need to commit an hour or so a month to share your knowledge, ideas, expertise, and a listening ear. We will partner you with a new troop leader in your area and/or level. Please contact Vickie Dynice at vdynice@gscglb.org. Perhaps you are one of our new leaders and would like to have a mentor? Please contact Vickie and she will partner you with one of our seasoned volunteer leaders.

Needed: Event Venues

We’re looking for inexpensive sites to hold future Girl Scout events like sleep-overs and other larger indoor events (dances, dinners, etc). We would need an indoor location to hold about 100-200 people. Tables, chairs, kitchens and sound equipment are usually a huge plus, but not required! If you know of a place we could contact that can provide us with a hall or large room, please email Vickie.

We’re also looking for ideas for venues for next year’s Cookie Rally, which takes place in late January. This site would need to be able to accommodate anywhere from 300 – 700 people and since it’s in January, it would need to have some type of shelter. Email Vickie if you have any ideas!

Ice Dogs!

Our annual “Night out with The Ice Dogs” raised over $2,400! The Board of Directors would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the Service Units for donating such beautiful baskets for the Silent Auction and to RoxAnn Batovsky and Kelsey Hutchinson for serving on the committee.

Summer Camp

The Resident Camp Book for 2007 is now available on the website. Signups for Resident camps begin February 1st. The new GSCGLB Summer Camp book for 2007 will be available at the beginning of February and signups for those camps begin March 19th.
