Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach

October 2007

Exploring Girls' Leadership

The Girl Scout Research Institute has just put out a new research document titled “Exploring Girls Leadership”. Exploring Girls’ Leadership comes at a pivotal time in Girl Scouts of the USA’s history and is a resource on youth, girls, and leadership.  Importantly, the document helps establish Girl Scouts as an expert on girls in general, and on leadership development in particular.  It serves as a lead up to an original study on girls and leadership that will explore girls’ and boys’ definitions of leadership, their perceptions and attitudes about leadership and leadership behaviors, and what girls need to see themselves as leaders today and in the future.

This report analyzes the literature from the youth development and youth leadership fields and contrasts continued misperceptions with youths’ realities and community approaches to leadership in the field.  It also suggests areas for further study, such as the aspirational gap faced by girls who see themselves as leaders today but don’t necessarily aspire to leadership roles as adults.  In addition, the review gives voice to girls by including findings from a small online survey and focus groups of girls around the country. In conjunction with its 95th anniversary in 2007, Girl Scouting has launched a historic transformation to modernize the iconic organization and focus on leadership development for girls in the 21st century.  In addition to creating new leadership programming for girls, Girl Scouts of the USA is revitalizing the Girl Scout brand, creating new fundraising models, improving volunteer systems, and significantly realigning the national Girl Scout council infrastructure.  The monumental changes have been designed to deliver a program that focuses on Girl Scouts’ core strength of leadership development, while also offering provable outcomes that benefit girls, families and communities.  Please contact Myrna if you would like a copy of this document.

Ambassador Leadership Advisory Program

One of the most important priorities for our council is to be sure girl voices and girl input is included in everything we do. With that, we are inviting girls in grades 10th-12th to be part of the Ambassador Leadership Advisory Group. This group will meet with our CEO and Board Chair to provide input on council and GSUSA issues, attend two Board Meetings, and serve as an ambassador for Girl Scouts. This program will provide the girls with the ability to really influence the policies and activities of our council, network and work closely with the CEO and Board of Directors, invitations to special events, develop additional leadership and communication skills. This is a great opportunity for our older girl - please contact Shannon Johnston for additional information.

Special Thanks

A very special Thank You to Troop 433 and Troop 126 for donating their time and face painting abilities! Troop 433 staffed a face painting booth at the recent Long Beach Day Nursery annual family picnic while the girls from Troop 126 staffed a face painting booth at the recent Long Beach 5th District neighborhood picnic. Thanks so much!

A special thanks to Thomas & Erica Beckman who generously donated a very gently used riding lawnmower. Our maintenance man, Cenaido, will have a much easier time mowing the lawn of El Ranchito sitting upon this generous gift. Many thanks to Jim Anderson for procuring this donation and for delivering to El Ranchito.
