Mother-Daughter Retreat at Skyland
On the weekend of October 21st and 22nd, nearly 50 moms and daughters made the trip up to our own
beautiful Skyland Ranch for a weekend of bonding, relaxation, beautiful scenery, and fresh mountain
air. Moms and daughters enjoyed creating homemade spa products such as soaps and bath salts. A Skyland
retreat would not complete without enjoying the outdoors. Hiking and archery was enjoyed during the day
while the evening activities included a very special “Trust Walk” and a good ol’ campfire complete with
tasty s’mores and camp songs. Many thanks to “Maple” and “LoLo” for creating this terrific experience
for our girls and their moms – they did an amazing job!
Keep your eyes open for the specific dates of our next Mother-Daughter retreat currently being planned for next spring!

How Can I Help ?
From being the "head cheerleader" who encourages and supports her daughter in Girl Scouting, to accompanying
the girls on a field trip to a local museum, to helping raise the funds and traveling with a group on an
exciting adventure, you can use your skills and explore your interests. Here are a few of the many ways
you can support your Girl Scout:
-
Suggest a fun day trip
-
Set up a phone tree
-
Coordinate transportation for an outing
-
Be a guest speaker
-
Teach girls a new skill
-
Design a troop photo album
-
Join girls on a field trip
-
Learn first aid at a Girl Scout council sponsored training session so that you can support girls on
their outings
-
Become an advocate in your community for Girl Scouting
-
Financially support the council through family giving, employer sponsored giving, or donation
of goods and services.
-
Tell your girl you're proud of her!

Destinations for Older Girls
A Girl Scout Destination is your chance to go somewhere new, do something different and meet people
from everywhere you can imagine. You can travel around the corner or around the globe. Has your daughter
thought about traveling when she gets out of school? Why wait?! Choose from many types of events. Your
daughter will have the opportunity to see what life is really like for an M.D. or camp in the green depths
of the Costa Rican rainforest. Perhaps she would like to spend a week as a Zoo Keeper at the Bush Gardens
Zoo in Florida, work side by side with a director on a film set, or attend Space Camp in the U.S. Space
and Rocket Center. Have a star performer in your family? The Broadway Adventure is designed for 16 to
18-year-olds as they see Broadway and beyond from the perspective of the performers. These and many
other opportunities are available through this Girl Scout program. She can travel around the corner
or around the globe.
Please don't be intimidated by the price. Many of the events are offered at a reduced price from what
the public would be charged. Plus, funding is available from the Council and we can help you with ideas
for raising money for the trip. Girl Scout Destinations are designed for girls 11-18. The majority of
destinations are designed for individual girls; however, they are now offering additional experiences
specifically for troops.
For more information about available Destinations, please visit the
GSCGLB website or the
studio2B website.
Destinations information on Studio2B.org can be found
under Escape in the main menu
at the top of the page. For help or more information on Destinations with the Girl Scout Council of
Greater Long Beach, contact Teresa at (562) 421-8456 ext. 226.
Did You Know?
Juliette Low was hearing impaired. She has lost the majority of her hearing in one ear as a child and lost
hearing in the other ear as a result of a grain of rice getting stuck in her good ear during the tradition
of throwing grains of rice to celebrate newly married couples. Because of Juliette's hearing disability,
she made the Girl Scouts a place where disabilities would be accepted and included in activities.

Juliette Program
Have you had parents and/or girls approach you about wanting to be a Girl Scout but cannot fully commit to
participating in a troop? If your daughter’s troop is full and/or there is not a troop available for
the girl, please talk to them about our Juliette Program. Our Juliette program is an exciting partnership
between responsible caring adults and girls. This new program is designed to provide Girl Scouts for girls
ages 5-17 who are not currently involved with a troop. Juliette program participants will be meeting on a monthly
basis. Girls will work on traditional Girl Scout age-appropriate badge work, service-learning
opportunities, and will have the opportunity to participate in our annual product sale programs.
Juliette’s are also invited to attend a variety of council sponsored programs and events. For additional
information please contact Sheryln at (562) 421-8456 x213.

Ice Dogs!
Our annual Ice Dogs fundraiser is just around the corner on November 18th. This is a great family event,
recruitment tool, and an opportunity to introduce your friends and family to Girl Scouts! One of the components
of this event is a silent auction and this year we have asked the Service Units to donate a themed basket or two
to the event. Your Service Unit leaders should be contacting you in the next couple of weeks regarding this project.
We are also looking for additional auction items; perhaps you have season tickets to a local theater, symphony,
or sports team that you could contribute a pair of tickets. Maybe your family, business, or employer can donate
goods or services. Or any other type of auction item and donations are greatly appreciated. Additional details
will be forthcoming– stay tuned and check the website! Please contact Myrna Pappas via email
mpappas@gscglb.org, or telephone at (562) 421-8456 x229 regarding
the silent auction or ticket information. Proceeds from this fundraiser support the council in many ways,
including: sponsored programs, staff, and facilitates. Thanks for you support!
