It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time!
Thanks to all of the troops who attended the Cookie Rally last month. We received great feedback
about the event; the skits that were presented were a hit! If you have ideas for next year’s
rally (location, program, staffing assistance, etc) please send them to
ideas@gscglb.org with “Cookie Rally” as the subject line. Thank you!

Cookies 101 for Parents: The Whys and Hows
Why Girl Scout cookies? Why should your daughter participate? Why not just donate? Because the
Girl Scout Cookie Program is the greatest of all win-win activities! The Girl Scout Cookie Program
is the nation’s premier Business and Economic Literacy initiative for girls. Many successful
business women today say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies. Girls practice useful
life skills like planning, decision-making, marketing, goal-setting, and customer service. During
cookie activities, girls are members of a team working towards a common goal, with each girl
striving to do her best. This program activity is directly related to our purpose of helping all
girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens!
How:
-
Help your daughter in setting her goals. Some examples include:
Gain confidence
Improve people skills
Learn how to handle money
Sell ____ packages
Earn ____ recognitions
-
Brainstorm ideas about how she can reach her goal
-
Review safety guidelines and procedures
-
Accompany her when she is taking orders, during delivery of the cookies and money collection.
-
Make sure cookie money is turned in to your troop leader as soon as possible, along with other troop-specific order information, delivery and paperwork details.
-
Congratulate your mini-mogul on a job well done!
What is My Role as a Parent?
Now that you know the “whys” and “hows” of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, how can you support
your daughter in this important learning activity? Always keep in mind that the function of adults
in the cookie activities is to guide the girls so they can gain invaluable experience—not to do it
for them. It is not about the number of boxes your daughter sells, but rather her experience and the
skills and knowledge she is gaining.
Remember, if adults usurp the role of the girls, the girls are robbed of the learning, the ownership
and the pride of accomplishment that they would otherwise gain from the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Operation Appreciation
Operation Appreciation is our council program which gives our soldiers who are
currently serving our country over seas a little “taste of home.” Girls Scouts from our council team
up with their cookie customers to participate in this program. Last year we sent 1,380 boxes of
delicious Girl Scout cookies. Troop 363 and Troop 451 were the two top donating troops last year
and delivered the cookies to the local National Guard base. Operation Appreciation donation forms
are available from your daughter’s troop leader or on the website Forms page under
Seasonal Forms.

Making Summer Plans?
Enroll your daughter in our summer day camps. Day campers enjoy all the fun of camp without spending
the night and camps are open to all girls ages 5-17. Each camp features a program theme with specialized
activities designed for each age level. Girls attend camp five consecutive days for six hours each day,
and extended care before and after camp is available. Day camps are held at both our in-town camp
“El Ranchito” and at our waterfront camp “Marine Landing.” Camps guide are available on the
website.

for non-profits) please email the venue contacts to
ideas@gscglb.org. In the subject line, write 'Girl Scout Venues.'

Matching Gifts
Many companies match their employee’s charitable contributions or volunteer hours to non-profit
organizations such as Girl Scouts. Your individual gift to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long
Beach may be eligible for matching funds. There is no cost to you. It's usually a very easy process,
in most cases all you will need to do is complete a simple form provided by your employer. Check
with your employer about their matching program, or visit the
Kintera Matching Gifts
website and enter the name of your company to see if they are registered as a matching gift organization.
