Follow the Reader: A Girl Scout Family Reading Project
Based on the five principles of the White House literacy initiative, No Child Left Behind, phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension are the focus of this patch program for Daisy
through Junior Girl Scouts. The family centered book for the program is completely bilingual, written in both English
and Spanish. This program can be completed by individual girls and their family, or as a troop
activity. It consists of a specific book and activities for each Girl Scout level. Once the girl completes
the book for her level, she will earn the Follow the Reader patch. Books are available at our
Council Shop. Contact Terri,Council Shop Manager, at (562) 421-8456 ext 215 with any merchandise questions.

Ranchito camps. Please see our website for a list of open camps or contact
Jeanette at (562) 421-8456 ext. 204 for additional information about summer camp registration for 2007.
Summer Camp Employment
Do you know anyone looking for summer employment? We are in the process of hiring our summer camp staff. Job
descriptions and applications will be available on our website by mid-April. Please contact
Teresa (562) 421-8456 ext 226 or
Melissa at ext 227 for additional information.
Religious Awards
Girl Scouts welcomes girls from every religion and encourages them to grow spiritually and celebrate
their beliefs if they so desire. Religious award programs have been developed nationally by the various
religious groups so that a girl might learn more about her faith and become a stronger member of her own
religious group. Girl Scouts recognizes these programs and allows recognition to be worn on the official
uniform, but each religious organization develops and administers its own program. Religious awards are
optional programs for girls to complete with the help of their families and religious leaders. Materials
are available through our council shop. Additional information can be found on the
P.R.A.Y Publishing website or by contacting
Lauren Fernandez at (562) 421-8456 ext 240.
