Here are some safety tips on
selling.
- Each troop and each girl must be registered to participate in the product sale.
- Participation in the Girl Scout product sale is voluntary.
- Each girl must have a signed parent/guardian permission form to participate.
- Income from product sales belongs to the whole troop, not to individual girl members.
- Girls must be accompanied by an adult when selling door-to-door.
- Girls should be identifiable as Girl Scouts by wearing a uniform or membership pin.
Girls should:
- Always use the buddy system with an adult when selling door to door.
- Do not enter homes
- Do not give out your phone number
- Use safe pedestrian practices
- Do not carry large amounts of money
- Money for products sold should be collected when the products are delivered. (CASH ONLY, NO CHECKS.)
Provisions for safeguarding the money must be made in advance. Make frequent deposits to troop account.
- Girls should be given a small amount of product at one time. The Troop Sales Manager may collect total
payment for the items distributed before giving girls additional amounts of the product. Ask the Troop
Sales Manager for a receipt for product and money paid.
- REMEMBER, PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE RETURNED OR EXCHANGED.
- Troop-To-Troop opportunities are available.
Store Sales Tips
- Train parents who will be working the store sale. Girls need a signed event permission
slip and emergency medical form for each store sale.
- Girls must be identifiable as a Girl Scout by wearing a membership pin or uniform. You are
representing Girl Scouts - be on your best behavior. No tag-a-longs.
- No eating while selling products. Remind girls to eat and use the restroom before arriving at the store site.
- Bring a table and chair for each door. Bring product sales poster to display on table or easel.
Do not hang them on the store walls. Clean up and take all trash with you when you leave.
- Bring a cash box with plenty of change for each door. Adults should handle cash boxes. Bring
Store Sale Report, included in your packet, to track number of boxes sold. Yes, accept troop sponsored
and Operation Appreciation donations, but do not overtly solicit them.
- Two adults must be present at each store sale. Approach customers on their way out of the business when possible.
Short shifts with few girls' works best. Have adults on hand to pick up more product from cupboard if
needed and to bank large amounts of cash you receive. DO NOT keep large amounts of cash at store site.
- Check out the store site ahead of time. Is there an overhang in case of rain, or too much sun? Bring
tarps or plastic bags to cover product in case of rain and remember product can and does melt!
- Thank the Store Manager when your sale is over. Selling in front of a store is a privilege. We want to
be able to return to this store again and again. Handle any conflicts professionally. Remember the Girl
Scout Law and Promise. Call the Council for assistance if necessary.
Additional Sales Plans
- Be creative....resourceful.....and share your ideas.
- Sell at churches. Get approval from the pastor and share time slots with other troops.
- Sell at parents work with your daughter - have product in hand.
