A consistent Girl Scout program is built around responsible, caring adults like yourself.
To help you become acquainted with the position you have volunteered for, Girl Scouts offer a
variety of training courses. Please view the entire Training Opportunities book in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format, to see all the information related to training courses, including a registration form. If you do not have the most recent copy of
Acrobat Reader, you may download it for free from the
Adobe website. Alternatively, you may check the Council MasterCalendar for upcoming trainings.
The training courses will prepare you to:
- work closely and confidently with girls
- help you to create a variety of girl centered activities based upon the Girl Scout philosophy
- teach you Girl Scout terminology and tradition
- allow you to develop connections with other Girl Scout volunteers.
The Girl Scout Training Team consists of volunteers and staff who are knowledgeable
in all aspects of Girl Scouting and are committed to sharing their knowledge with you.
Leader Training
- New Leader Orientation (NLO)
All new leaders and assistant leaders begin by taking NLO. This 1½ hour course covers the basics
of the Girl Scout experience, starting a troop, registering your troop, and getting the help you need.
Sign up to take this course as soon as you consider becoming a leader! After completing this course,
you may start the process of becoming a troop.
Basic Leadership Training
In addition, all leaders and assistant leaders are required to complete a series of three Basic
Leadership Training courses. These courses prepare them to provide a Girl Scout experience confidently
and safely to girls. The three courses must be taken in order and completed within 3 months of registering your troop.
Basic Leadership Training A (BLT A)
Covers more of the Girl Scout experience, the importance of a
girl/adult partnership, ingredients of a troop meeting, safety, and finances. Troop meetings may not
begin until at least one leader has completed BLT A.
Basic Leadership Training B (BLT B)
Covers the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach's
program sites, safety for specific activities, managing a troop, engaging responsible, caring adults,
and ceremonies. Troops may not participate in activities other than meetings until at least one
leader has completed BLT B.
Basic Leadership Training C (BLT C)
Age Appropriate Training. Choose the course for the age of
girls you will be working with. Leaders will receive information specific to the girls age level
and learn how to deliver a Girl Scout experience that is for girls, by girls as well as how to earn
Girl Scout recognitions. When a troop changes levels, leaders are required to complete a new BLT C
training for their new level.
Troop Camper Training
In order for a troop to participate in any overnight experience, including sleepovers, the troop must
have an adult trained as a Troop Camper in attendance. Only registered adults with an approved volunteer
application and cleared background check may serve as a Troop Camper. Troop Campers will be trained in
the skills needed to teach girls how to have a fun, safe, overnight experience.
-
Level I - An Overnight Experience
No previous training required. Level I is required for indoor sleepovers and indoor cooking at private homes.
Level II - Camping Readiness
Prerequisite: Completion of Level I - An Overnight Experience. Level II is required for any fire building or
outdoor cooking, whether by adults or girls, at troop activities. Level II is also required for any
sleeping indoors, in shelters or in tents at facilities or campgrounds other than private homes.
Recertification
Troop Campers must recertify their skills every 3 years. It is your responsibility to make sure that
your certification does not lapse.
Beyond the Basics - An Enrichment Course
This course is not a required course but is designed to provide the Troop Camper with additional information
to enhance their troop's camping experiences. Participants will receive an introduction to hiking, letter
boxing, lashing and Dutch Oven cooking.
Prerequisites: Completion of Levels I and II - An Overnight Experience and Camping Readiness.
